Painted to the interior with a central medallion of boys, the dish shaped rim with a diamond pattern border, the exterior with four scenes from ‘The Romance of the Western Chamber’ beneath the hatched pattern with enclosed flowerheads to the exterior of the rim. 20.3cm (8in) diam. The Romance of the Western Chamber, also known as The Story of the Western Wing, in Chinese 西廂記 Xixiangji is amongst China’s most famous dramatic works. Written by the Yuan Dynasty playwriter Wang Shifu, it has enjoyed unparalleled popularity amongst the public since its appearance in the 13th century, and became a most popular subject matter for decorating blue and white porcelain in the Kangxi period.
