A blue and white ‘lotus’ bowl, Yongzheng six-character mark and possibly of the period. Estimate £800 – 1,200 (€1,100 – 1,600). Photo Bonhams.

The bowl gently curving up from the short foot rim to a straight mouth rim, the exterior painted in vivid cobalt blue with a dense ‘Indian’ lotus flower meander above a stylised lotus lappet band encircling the foot. 12.1cm (4 3/4in) diam.

NEW YORK, NY.– The Asia Week New York Association announces that 42 international galleries will participate in Asia Week New York 2015, the nine-day celebration of Asian art and culture that spans the metropolitan region from March 13 through 21, 2015.

Says Carol Conover, Chairman of Asia Week New York: “We look forward to another successful edition of Asia Week New York especially during The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s banner year when it is celebrating the 100th anniversary of its renowned Asian Art Department.”

Joining Asia Week New York for the first time is Shalini Ganendra Fine Art from Malaysia and Navin Kumar Gallery from New York. After a brief hiatus, Dr. Robert Bigler from Zurich and Wei Asian Arts from Brussels return to the fold.

Of deep rounded sides rising from a gently flared circular foot, incised on the exterior continuously with a flower scroll bearing four lotus blossoms at the compass points, all borne above a band of overlapping leaf lappets, all under an even and cool bluish-white glaze, the pointed convex base with a six-character kaishu mark within double circles. 15.3cm (6in) diam.

finely potted with deep rounded sides rising from a straight foot, carved around the exterior with four rows of overlapping petals resembling a lotus flower, the interior carved with a plain medallion in recess in the centre, applied overall with a beautiful sea-green glaze draining to white along the petal’s edges and stopping neatly around the unglazed foot, the latter applied with a transparent glaze, the neatly cut footrim left unglazed revealing a smooth light grey ware; 14.3 cm., 5 5/8  in.

Notes: The pale green glaze as found on the present bowl is extremely rare among ‘Yaozhou’ wares and identifies it as an early example, as this glaze colour disappeared when the kiln switched from using wood as fuel to firing with coal. Compare a pair of ‘Yaozhou’ flower-shaped bowls with a related glaze, sold in our London rooms, 11th May 2011, lot 1.

the deep rounded sides rising from a short tapering foot , carved around the exterior with overlapping lotus leaves and covered ovarall with a soft even bluish-green glaze; 17.4cm., 6 7/8 in.

Notes: A slightly larger bowl of this type is illustrated in Regina Krahl, Chinese Ceramics from the Meiyintang Collection, vol. one, London, 1994, pl. 539, where the author notes that lotus bowls were made during the Song and Yuan dynasties, however, the early examples such as the present bowl, are more carefully potted, carved, glazed and fired (see p. 290). The carving of the lotus petal is especially deep and crisp with later examples treating the design as a simple raised rib as if adding a quick finishing touch to the exterior.

Compare another related bowl of slightly smaller dimensions sold in these rooms, 9th June 2004, lot 178; one from the collection of George Debatz and exhibited at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, sold at Christie’s New York, 30th November 1983, lot 337; and a third example from the Eugene Bernat collection, sold in our New York rooms, 7th November 1980, lot 145. See also a smaller bowl published in Celadon from Longquan Kilns, Taipei, 1998, pl. 133; and one included in Longquan qingci, Beijing, 1966, pl. 28.

The interior of the bowl is painted in deep ink-blue with a stylised four-petalled flower head below a band of florets and crosses, and is encircled by a band of pendent trefoils, all below a cash diaper band at the rim. The exterior is decorated with a band of upright lotus petals between keyfret bands around the mouth and foot rims. 6 3/8 in. (16.1 cm.) diam.

the gently curved lobes rising to a slightly indented and everted rim, the interior finely and freely carved and combed with a medallion of a leafy lotus spray, the sides cleanly divided by six narrow fillets of slip each enclosing a single spray of flowering lotus, covered overall with a clear ivory glaze pooling in characteristic tear-drops down the exterior, all raised on a narrow tapered foot, the rim metal mounted, Japanese wood box. Diameter 8 3/8  in., 21.5 cm. Estimation 400,000 — 500,000 USD

The present bowl represents the superb stylistic achievements of the Ding potters and is notable for the naturalistic depiction of the lotus sprays, with the leaves curled and turned in different directions. This style of rendering is only found on a small number of other fine Ding pieces, such as a slightly larger bowl of this form and design, in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, included in the Museum’s exhibition Decorated Porcelains of Dingzhou. White Ding Wares from the Collection of the National Palace Museum, Taipei, 2014, cat. no. II-39, together with another carved with flower and fruit sprays, cat. no. II-40; and a fragment of a similar Song bowl, that forms part of the National Palace’s vast shard collection including Ding shards recovered from the kiln sites at Jiancicun and Yangchuancun in Quyang County, Hebei, published in Gugong Bowuguan can Zhongguo gudai yaozhi biaoben. Hebei juan [Specimens from China’s ancient kilns preserved in the Palace Museum: Hebei, vol. 2], Beijing, 2006, pl. 169 (top).

Ding wares are ranked amongst the ‘Five Famous Wares of the Song Dynasty’, a term coined by collectors of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Celebrated for their thin potting, fine white body, which does not require a slip to appear white after firing, and an ivory-colored glaze which tends to run down in somewhat darker ‘tears’, Ding wares became renowned for their elegant forms that often derived from contemporaneous silver and lacquer vessels to find favor with the court and wealthy monasteries during the Song and Jin periods.

Another characteristic of Ding ware is the use of metal to bind the rim. The contrasting color of the distinctive bronze, copper, and sometimes precious metal, rims enhanced the aesthetic beauty of the wares while setting the Ding ware apart from the ordinary. Ts’ai Mei-fen of the National Palace Museum, Taipei, suggests that the metal-banded rim was the popular taste of the time, possibly instituted because of the popular practices of decorating edges. Compare a bowl of this type similarly carved with peony sprays included in the exhibition White Porcelain of Ding Yao, Nezu Institute of Fine Arts, Tokyo, 1983, cat. no. 132; and another decorated with floral blooms, published in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum – Porcelain of the Song Dynasty (I), Hong Kong, 1996, pl. 45, together with a bowl depicting ducks and lotuses in alternating panels around the sides, pl. 61. A further duck and lotus-carved bowl, from the Carl Kempe collection, illustrated in Oriental Ceramics. The World’s Great Collections, vol. 8, Tokyo, 1982, pl. 108, was sold in our London rooms, 14th May 2008, lot 258.
