The present box in gilt silver stands on three legs and is fitted with a domed hinged lid. The figurative repoussé work on the wall and on the lid is particularly beautiful in the piece. The cover presents an amorous pastoral couple in a landscape with an architectural backdrop. The testimony of their love is cupid to the left. The wall features a ruined landscape with some scattered figures.
The idyllic representations of this kind can be found already in Hellenestic works of art. The shepferd scenes were particularly wide-spread as representations In the 17th and 18th centuries demonstrating the idealized harmonic human existence in nature.
The box is hallmarked with the maker’s mark ‘HIS’, the Augsburg city mark and the assay scrape mark. It is in good condition, showing some signs of wear mainly on the underside. The dimensions are 7 x 16.5 x 13 cm. The total weight is circa 312 grams. (cko)
