A rare Famille Rose porcelain lantern vase with playing boys and quails in a garden, China, iron-red seal mark and period of Daoguang. Estimate 10 000 €. Photo Nagel

H. 28,7 cm. Very minor wear, good condition

Provenance: Former collection Georg Weishaupt, Berlin

The depiction of multiple boys at play in a garden – representing the wish for many sons – was a popular theme in the decorative arts of the Ming and Qing dynasties. In the present vase, each of the boys are engaged in activities potent with symbolism.
