Rare American Natural Pearl, Mississippi River. Estimate US$ 20,000 – 30,000 (€16,000 – 24,000). Photo Bonhams.
This is a one-of-a-kind wing-shaped natural pearl from the Mississipi River. These pearls are distinguished by a recognizable, soft luster which is not seen in saltwater pearls. The present pearl has not only this exemplary luster but also a pink to green iridescence known in the pearl trade as « orient » which appears to hover above the white body color. The wing-shape would allow the designing jeweler to create an exceptional and unique piece of jewelry using this pearl as inspiration, undrilled. Weighing approximately 25.50 carats and measuring 26.90 x 20.60 x 11.20mm
Accompanied by a Gemological Institute of America report number 11176972 dated June 8, 2000 stating that the 25.50 carats (102.0 grains) pearl is a natural freshwater pearl.
