Two Chinese Embroidered Rank Badges, 19th-20th Century. Photo Doyle

One made for a civil official of the ninth rank, worked in golden and ivory colored silk, woven with a paradise flycatcher gazing up at the sun, standing on a rocky ledge issuing from stylized waves amidst a scrolling ruyi head cloud filled sky, within a scrolling floral foliage border; the other made for a civil official of the fifth rank, worked with a silver pheasant gazing towards the sun amongst auspicious symbols, above lishui stripe, within a alternating border of shou characters and bats. Height of larger 11 1/2 inches, width 12 inches. Estimate $600-800
