Pair of Chinese Embroidered Rank Badges, 19th Century. Photo Doyle

Made for a civil official of the first rank, worked in gold and colored silk, woven with a crane facing the sun as it stands on one leg atop a rock emerging from the froth capped waves below, flanked by further rockwork from which issue a peach tree, narcissus, and blossoming peony, all below bats in flight amidst scrolling ruyi-form clouds, within an alternating bat and shou character border. Height 12 inches, width 12 1/2 inches. Estimate $2,000-3,000
