Ye Hongxing. Born in 1972, Ye Hongxing has become one of the most exciting rising stars of the Chinese contemporary art scene.

Ye Hongxing obtained her Master’s Degree from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing (arguably China’s top art academy) in 1998.

Between 2003 and 2005, Ye’s work was exhibited at a few galleries throughout China, as well as the Chongqing Art Museum and the Nanjing Museum of Contemporary Art. In 2004, Ye Hongxing participated in her first international art exhibition at the 7th Annual Exhibition of Sculptures and Installations in Venice, Italy. The next year, Ye Hongxing’s work was exhibited in Taiwan at Art Taipei 2005.

In 2006, Ye Hongxing was selected as one of China’s top 20 emerging painters at the Dragonair Emerging Chinese Artist Awards. The selection committee included the Director of Art Cologne, the Curator of the San Francisco Asian Art Museum, the Director of the Stuttgart Museum of Art in Germany, the Co-Founder and Co-Editor in Chief of Beaux-Arts Magazine (France’s top art magazine) and the Executive Director of the Shanghai Art Museum, amoung others.

In 2007 and 2008, Ye Hongxing’s works were exhibited in Europe for the first time at the Art Cologne, the earliest established and still one of the most important art expositions in the world. Ye’s work was also shown for the first time in the USA in Miami at Reed Savage Gallery in 2007 and in New York at “Chinese Contemporary Art Comes to New York” at Art Scene New York.

A rare blue and white hexagonal tubular bird feeder, Da Ming Xuande Nian Zao six-character mark in underglaze blue in a line and of the period (1426-1435). Photo Christie’s Image Ltd 2008

The slightly bowed body molded horizontally with six slightly concave facets divided by narrow flutes that continue to the conforming outline of the two ends molded with mallow blossoms, and painted with bands of classic scroll in deep inky tones of underglaze blue with ‘heaping and piling’ shading in areas to blackish brown, the two large apertures on the top with unglazed rims, with the reign mark reserved on a white panel on one side and the pair of small attachment loops applied on the opposite side; 3¼ in. (8.3 cm.) long. Estimate $20,000 – $30,000. Price Realized $50,000

Provenance: Acquired prior to 1985.

Notes: The quality and variety of the porcelains produced during the reign of the Xuande Emperor are a testament to his keen personal interest in porcelain production. Both large and small pieces are equally well made, and the variety of shapes is considerable, ranging from large jars to tiny bird feeders such as the present example.

A number of related Xuande-marked blue and white bird feeders have been published such as the example in the Shanghai Museum, modeled as a section of bamboo and decorated with lingzhi scroll, illustrated in Underglaze Blue and Red, Shanghai, 1987, p. 141, no. 139. Like the present example, the reign mark of the Shanghai bird feeder is prominently written in a line on one side of the vessel. The Shanghai example also features two apertures on top with unglazed rims and similar molded flower heads at either end painted in underglaze blue. Other comparable Xuande-marked examples include the bird feeder of very similar form to the present lot, but decorated with lotus scroll, sold at Sotheby Parke Bernet, Hong Kong, 18-19 May 1982, lot 139, and the bird feeder modeled as two pomegranates, also with two unglazed apertures on top, illustrated in Jingdezhen chutu Yuan Ming guanyao ciqi, Beijing, 1999, p. 200, no. 164, together with other small Xuande-marked bird-cage vessels of various shapes, p. 202, nos. 167-71. See, also, the Xuande-marked ‘bird-feeding vase’ decorated with similar undulating floral scroll in the National Palace Museum, Taipei illustrated in Catalogue of the Special Exhibition of Selected Hsuan-te Imperial Porcelains of the Ming Dynasty, Taipei, 1998, pp. 66-7, no. 6.

With shallow sides rising to a slightly everted, rounded rim, painted in the interior with a roundel containing four cranes amidst scrolling clouds confronted around a stylized shou character, the exterior painted in similar fashion with a continuous frieze of cranes amidst clouds; 6 1/8 in. (15.6 cm.) diam., Japanese wood box. Estimate $20,000 – $30,000. Price Realized $23,750.

Notes: Two smaller Jiajing mark and period dishes decorated in very similar fashion are illustrated by J. Harrison-Hall inMing Ceramics in the British Museum, London, 2001, p. 241, nos. 9:54 and 9:55. A related, though larger, Jiajing-marked example with interior painted with cranes in flight above a rock and beneath a shou character, is illustrated by He Li, Chinese Ceramics, New York, 1996, p. 224, no. 421.
